NTOZAKE SHANGE

I’ve enjoyed a pleasurable reading season thus far for 2018. Here are a few books I’ll give a brief review of that has brought me delight.

This Will Be My Undoing by Morgan Jerkins. I found the collection of essays to be compelling and well written. Jerkins has remarkable insight on the essays she has drafted. Her intellect shines and her raw honesty is appreciated.

Where The Line Bleeds by Jesmyn Ward. I choose to read Ward’s work chronologically. Where The Line Bleeds is a beautifully written prose by a phenomenal writer.

You are transported to Mississippi’s Gulf coast, cast into the family of Ma-mee while following the lives of Christophe & Joshua, whose lives are complicated by the absence of their parents. This is an example of great fiction, the story takes you on a ride from beginning to end.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. Hands down this by far is my favorite read of 2018. This is a beautifully written novel about a complex love story of Celeste (Georgia) & Roy II. Jones, is a phenomenal storyteller. I was so enthralled by the story and developed a connection with each of the characters. This is a must-read for all.

Beneath My Smile – Searching for Love, Peace, and Happiness- A Memoir by Anna Bella. Heartbreaking is the first word that came to mind upon reading the first chapter. Highlighting the various forms of abuse in her life, Anna Bella becomes the heroine in her own story. To all the women who have endured abuse, this story shows you that, you too can rise.
