The Last One by Rachel Howzell Hall
The Last One has a unique title that, after reading, you understand how it perfectly accompanies the storyline. It began with an oddly familiar theme for this genre and it took me a few chapters to decide what to make of this tale.
Out of the gate, the first scene captured and piqued my interest–we’re in an unknown place with a nameless main character. Now I have never read the Harry Potter series, so comparing it to that story would be unfair. However, you should catch my point with those books as a reference. The uncommon names and places added to the story’s mysticism.
The Last One follows a female warrior who wakes up in a forest naked. Throughout the entire story, she searches for her origins and family connections. The visual description of the lost warrior was interesting. She had yellow eyes and a brown complexion, she was a very tall woman in the village, and she mistakenly found herself trapped, with no idea how she arrived there.
The fact that the woman walked around naked longer than I thought she would also kept my attention–that was the shrewdness I believe Hall wanted readers to explore in the story.
And if you love romance this story had one that was not quite a full-fledged romance, but it’s steamy enough to keep you turning the pages. Hall allowed the pair to almost make a physical connection a few times, which eventually became a bone of contention in the story.
Kai and Jadon, a woman named Livia, who I initially thought was Jadon’s sister, were the main characters in this story. When the group set out to find the township in which Kia originated, many events occurred after mythical creatures destroyed the town.
There is a great deal of fighting between the misfits and mystical creatures. The demigods and other elements had Kai on the ropes. There wasn’t enough downtime for strategy before another attack happened which made the pacing of this story good because I never knew what was going to happen next. Be prepared to expect the unexpected while reading.
The suggested conclusion about Kai being royalty floated about for several chapters before Hall gave readers an answer regarding Kia’s bloodline. Although several theories cascade as clues, it took some time to pinpoint the connection between the constant waring in each town the pair visited, as it related to her journey for discovery.
The ending was surprising because the final plot twist changed the version I expected when the story ended. This story was action-packed and kept me glued to find out the ending. So, if you are looking for a Sci-Fi story with a mythical connection, I’d recommend The Last One.
