YA Thriller: Breakout

Picture this: a bunch of super-rich Black teens (everyone is Blue Ivy) head to a private island for Spring Break to stay at a luxurious resort, to forget about their problems, and before they can let their hair completely down, people on the island (including one of them) start turning up dead.

If you sat up straight after reading that, then Breakout is a must-read.

I like to call the authors of Breakout, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, Dhonielle Clayton, Nic Stone, Nicola Yoon, and Tiffany D. Jackson, the Avengers of YA literature, but you can call them by their first names.

This is the third time these six authors have linked up to create literary magic. They first teamed up for Blackout in 2021, followed by Whiteout in 2022. Now they’re back with Breakout, and this story has so many twists and turns that it will be hard for any reader to put the book down until they reach the end.

On this episode, I spoke with three of the six bestselling authors behind Breakout, Angie Thomas, Tiffany D. Jackson, and Ashley Woodfolk, to discuss the explosive new YA thriller.

We talked about how six authors could come together and collaborate on one story. Their ability as storytellers to build suspense, along with the friendships, secrets, romance, and betrayals at the heart of the story and so much more.
