Womanish Theology With Khristi Lauren Adams
Sistah Girls, we are back with a new season of our book club podcast, and our first guest is Khristi Lauren Adams!
Khristi Lauren Adams is an author, youth advocate, and ordained Baptist minister. When I was deciding whom to launch the new season with, Adams kept coming to mind.
There was intentionality when Adams penned Womanish Theology: Discovering God through the Lens of Black Girlhood. She didn’t seek to exploit Black girls using spirituality but investigated their thoughts and lived experiences as it pertained to God.
She also included her lived experiences and her relationship with God.
Do you remember who introduced you to biblical text?
That was a question I rang off in my head while reading Womanish Theology. For Adams, it was her grandmother, Mama Hattie, and when I thought about it, it was my mother and grandmother too.
I didn’t sit with an opened bible, memorizing scripture; I repeated it. Word for word, I took in (even if I didn’t want to) the scriptures my grandmother would repeat. I sang the hymns and noticed the difference in her posture when she said her morning prayers and when she closed the day with evening prayers.
Womanish Theology is a new theological thought that explores scripture, theodicy, salvation, prayer, and the image of God from a Black girl’s point of view.
I finished this book with a huge smile plastered on my face. I felt seen, heard, and most of all, understood. Black girls deserve to be understood.
