Hairstyles When Working on Your WIP

Sistah Girls, if you’re anything like me, you take your comfortability seriously.

Whether I’m traveling, running an errand, or in bed binge-watching something on these pricey streaming services… either way the cookie crumbles, comfort is always the name of my game!

You can bet your favorite signed paperback that this requirement extends the times when I am racing towards typing “the end” on one of my works in progress. Besides having all of my writing necessities at my fingertips, a major way I provide myself a level of comfort mid-project is with my hairstyle.

Sistah Girls, if you please, allow me to share with you six hairstyles you can rock while working on your WIP…

Stay Ready to Write Knotless Braids

Knotless braids are the ultimate go-to whenever I need to lock in and stay the course on a project. While there’s been some debate over the longevity of this braid style, what I can say is that knotless braids help me stay ready so I don’t have to get ready.

The Messy Bun of Exhaustion

We’ve all been there… hair freshly taken down, wash day being stalled due to life’s overwhelming demands or just pure tiredness, and we still have work for the week on top of our author duties.

It’s those days that the messy bun of exhaustion comes in handy. Plus, it’s cute enough and convenient.

Write Rough and Stuff Afro Puffs

There is something especially, blackity Black about rocking afro puffs while working on a new book. At least that’s the case for me; which is why I couldn’t, not put the fro on the list… well that and it is Black History Month.

Take These Last Two Braids and Love Em

Author Baes, for those days when you’re between styles, the cute and low-maintenance stitching of two French braids to the back is just the trick you need to ensure your WIP stays in progress.

Let’s Make Some Content Locs

All variations of locs are a chef’s kiss right off the bat. When I had my faux locs installed, you couldn’t keep me off socials; creating content to promote my WIP.

When discussing the versatility of a Black woman’s hair a few words come to mind: Fabulous, luxurious, and regal. And locs will always be part of the conversation.

Clack in the Hat

Y’all remember we started this conversation off talking about comfort, right?

Sistah Girls, there’s nothing more relaxing or enjoyable for this author than being snuggled in my bed, with my bonnet or scarf (the hat) on, clacking the keyboard of my HP until there are no words left in me.

Even when my hair is done, I never hesitate to throw my bonnet or scarf on for an at-home sprint.

(There’s a chance, I’m wearing a bonnet as I type this 🤭)

Alright Sistah Girls, that’s all I have for you today. No matter which hairstyle you favor (whether it’s on this list or not) remember that comfortability and convenience are the only things we as Black women are accepting in 2025 and beyond.
